Carlton & Oulton Marshes

The marshes are one of those places locals keep to themselves for good reason — once word gets out, it fills up fast on a sunny weekend. There’s a solid climbing structure for the kids, plenty of open grass to run around on, and the walking trails along the water are genuinely lovely, especially when the light hits the reed beds in the morning. Grab something from the cafe before you head out — the staff are actually friendly, not just going-through-the-motions friendly. Pack a picnic or use the tables on site, and don’t rush; this is a proper half-day spot, not a quick stop.
