Pirate Ship

Locals know this one well — Kowhai Park’s pirate ship structure is a proper Whanganui icon, and kids absolutely lose it when they first see it. The Moa Bird sculptures dotted around are genuinely cool, the kind of thing that makes adults stop and look too. On weekends and public holidays, the Lions Club miniature train does rides, which honestly never gets old no matter how many times you’ve been. Grab one of the picnic tables and you’ve got a solid afternoon sorted, with plenty of open grass for kids to burn off energy between turns on the train. It’s the sort of park that becomes a regular stop rather than a one-off visit.
