Lowther Castle & Gardens

If you’re going to make the drive out to Penrith, Lowther earns it. The adventure playground is properly good — slides, climbing frames, a sandbox, and a water feature that will absolutely destroy your child’s dry clothes, so pack a spare set. It’s enclosed and easy to keep an eye on, with benches and shaded seating for parents who want to actually sit down for five minutes. Beyond the playground, there’s open grass, walking trails through the forest, and a lake nearby, plus the castle ruins looming in the background which kids find genuinely dramatic. Factor in the cafe, the picnic tables, and a baby changing station, and honestly it’s one of the more sorted family days out in Cumbria.
