U.S. Route 66

If you’re driving the Mother Road through the Texas Panhandle, the stretch through Alanreed is worth slowing down for. There’s no playground equipment here, but that’s kind of the point — this is Route 66 in its rawest form, and the Gray County Safety Rest Area nearby gives families a decent place to stretch their legs. Kids who are into old roads and ghost town vibes will actually find it pretty cool. It’s one of those stops that doesn’t look like much on a map but sticks with you.
