Muddy‘s Playground

Right on the Cairns Esplanade, this is genuinely one of the best spots in the city for a half-day out with kids. The water feature is the obvious drawcard in the Queensland heat, but there’s enough going on — tunnels, a merry-go-round, musical equipment, sandbox — that even kids who aren’t keen on getting wet stay busy. It caters well to the 2-12 range without feeling like it’s trying too hard, and the inclusive design means it actually works for kids with different abilities, not just as an afterthought. Parents can keep an eye on things easily, there are restrooms on site, and the picnic tables mean you can stretch the visit out without needing to pack up and find somewhere else for lunch. Locals know to come early on weekends before it gets busy.
